New in 2010, ABCGN Moves to Computer-Based Testing ONLY

Beginning in 2010, the CGRN certification exam will be offered only via the Computer Based Testing (CBT) option. There is one exception to this change: ABCGN will continue offering the ONE and ONLY paper and pencil exam at SGNA's Annual Course.

ABCGN chose to move forward with offering only CBT testing because it has more benefits for the candidates than the traditional paper and pencil option, and it's more economically feasible for the organization. Here is a list of benefits that current CBT takers can testify to:

  • Convenience: More than 425 locations across the country to take the exam. Certificants will save significant travel expenses by taking the exam at a local site.
  • Flexible Dates: Certificants can choose any date that works for their schedule and the testing center's schedule within a 30 day pre-determined window in the Spring and Fall.
    • Spring exam window: 30 days prior to paper/pencil exam which takes place on the Saturday of the SGNA Annual Course
    • Fall exam window: October 1st - October 31st
  • Immediate Score Reporting: ABCGN is working with our testing company to implement tentative immediate score reporting for the CBT exam. Official scores will be received via mail a few weeks after the exam.

The Computer Based Test fee will remain the same: $400 for SGNA members and $485 for non-members. ABCGN's contracted testing company, Castle Worldwide, incurs extra fees for each CBT candidate; ABCGN is not profiting from this additional fee.

Since the inception of Computer Based Testing two years ago, over 60% of our candidates have moved to this test format. This leaves us with smaller and smaller numbers at our paper and pencil sites, sometimes as few as five nurses sitting for the exam. It is no longer fiscally responsible for ABCGN to maintain the regional test sites for paper and pencil exams; we hope the regions can understand this financial reality.

Many nursing organizations have already made the move to all computer based testing and ABCGN is very excited about this new transition. We've heard only positive feedback from candidates since implementing Computer Based Testing two years ago Moving to Computer Based Testing makes the certification process as seamless as possible for each candidate; leaving them more time and energy to put towards their studying.
