A Guide to Gastroenterology Recertification

To maintain certification, candidates can recertify by contact hours or examination. The ABCGN reviews all recertification submissions and reserves the right to audit any or all applications and supporting documentation. The ABCGN randomly audits a certain percentage of packets submitted by certified nurses seeking recertification. Your inability to supply supporting documentation, if audited, can result in denial of recertification.

Changes to Note in 2006 Recertification Process

• Monthly Review/Submission- In prior years recertification packets were reviewed after the May 31st and October 31st deadlines. Starting in 2006 recertification candidates can submit their recertification packets any time during the calendar year and packets will be reviewed and audited on a monthly basis for faster service to certificants.
• Submission Deadline - In prior years there were two submission deadlines, May 31st and October 31st. As already mentioned, candidates can now submit their recertification at any date through the year with the official submission deadline of December 31st. NOTE, however that until you receive notification that your recertification has been approved you will not be able to use your credentials, and so it is to your advantage to submit your recertification application earlier in the year.

Pre-review - ABCGN offers a service to applicants considering recertification by contact hours - a pre-review of your recertification package. This pre-review will help you evaluate your contact hours and make a better decision about whether to recertify by contact hours or by examination. In addition, putting together your pre-review package early will allow you extra time to accumulate points or document contact hours if there are any problems. There is a $50.00 charge for this service. Please note that the pre-review is not an official recertification application. Individuals will still be required to complete the recertification application and submit it by the full recertification application deadline with the appropriate fee.
