ABCGN

The ABCGN Recertification Program requires that the candidate update their knowledge and skills that reflect continuing competence as definded by the ongoing commitment of a registered nurse to integrate and apply the knowledge, skills, and judgement with the attitudes, values, and beliefs required to practice safely, effectively, and ethically in a designated role, patient population and/or setting .

The recertification by contact hour program requires that the nurse is actively practicing gastroenterology nursing. All candidates are required to obtain 75 contact hours. Of the 75 hours, 60 must be GI-specific and 30 of those must be from CE-approved nursing seminars or workshops. Gastroenterology is a medical specialty concerned with the study of digestive diseases.

Rationale:

A GI Specific contact hour should provide a knowledge or skill that is essential to providing care to a patient with a gastrointestinal disease or problem. The information imparted should enable the Gastroenterology nurse to anticipate the care and interventions needed to treat the patient; provide the necessary care and interventions, and supply follow up care and teaching.
