Awards & Scholarships

ABCGN’s awards and scholarships program support its vision to lead and promote professional excellence in the practice of gastroenterology nursing.

Applications for 2025 awards and scholarships will open in November 2024.

Certified GI Professional of the Year: 

The American Board of Certification for Gastroenterology Nurses (ABCGN) is dedicated to professional development of gastroenterology nurses. Through awards, this organization seeks to recognize those nurses who are dedicated in validating their qualifications through certification, and those who demonstrate commitment and leadership among colleagues and patients to enhance the practice of gastroenterology nursing.

Eligibility >

  • A nominee must be currently employed as a care provider in gastroenterology nursing or participate in a nursing leadership role, which influences or has influenced gastroenterology-nursing practices.
  • Must be certified for a period of three years or more.
  • Must be a current member of Society of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates (SGNA).
  • Cannot currently be serving on the ABCGN Board of Directors.

Excellence in Professionalism Distinction:

The American Board of Certification for Gastroenterology Nurses (ABCGN) is dedicated to professional development of gastroenterology nurses. This distinction recognizes facilities who support the gastroenterology nurse’s commitment to excellence through certification.

Eligibility >

  • Facility has 50% or greater of the nurses certified in gastroenterology.
  • Facility is a hospital based endoscopy unit, outpatient surgical or endoscopy center, or gastroenterology office or clinic.
  • Facility nurses are certified in gastroenterology by November of the year in which the facility is nominated.
  • Facility must submit a completed nomination form.
  • The facility may apply and receive the Excellence in Professionalism Distinction annually, as long as they meet the above criteria.

Outstanding Certified Region: 

This award recognizes the Society of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates (SGNA) Regional Society most active in supporting American Board of Certification for Gastroenterology Nurses (ABCGN) certification.

Performance Criteria >

  • Percentage of newly certified members and members re-certified within the past year
  • Number of continuing education hours offered within the past year and number that were GI-specific
  • Region’s involvement in promoting GI certification. Examples of activities are/but are not limited to:
    • Support of certification review course regionally
    • Scholarship/assistance with the cost of certification/recertification
    • Presentation/poster on the value of certification at an educational meeting
    • Celebrate National Certified Nurses Day and/or GI Nurses & Associates Week

Certification Scholarship: 

The American Board of Certification for Gastroenterology Nurses (ABCGN) Certification Scholarship has been established to financially assist candidates applying for the CGRN Exam. ABCGN will award 2 scholarships per year that will cover the exam fee.

Applicants must be prepared to sit for the CGRN exam in either the spring or fall of 2025. Scholarship award cannot be transferred to another certification cycle.

Eligibility >

  • The candidate must be currently working in the field of gastroenterology and have an interest in and commitment to gastroenterology nursing.
  • Support the goals and philosophy of ABCGN.
  • Must have current RN license.
  • Recipient must meet the CGRN exam eligibility prior to January 1, 2025 for the spring 2025 exam or by June 1, 2025 for the fall 2025 exam.

Recertification Scholarship: 

The American Board of Certification for Gastroenterology Nurses (ABCGN) Recertification Scholarship has been established to financially assist candidates for recertification by contact hours. The number of scholarships awarded will depend on funds available.

Eligibility >

  • The candidate must be currently working in the field of gastroenterology and have an interest in and commitment to gastroenterology nursing.
  • Support the goals and philosophy of ABCGN.
  • Must have current RN license.
  • Must be due for recertification in 2025.
